“It’s a good goal to get kids reading. But, how transformative and sustainable would it be to get kids to WANT to read?”
– Kwame Alexander, Founder, One Word at a Time
We want to bring Author Study into 1,000 schools this year!

Kwame Alexander founded One Word at a Time to spark middle-grade students’ motivation to read and write. We’re on a mission to make reading cool and fun! Because research shows that reading for pleasure leads to increased academic achievement, sharper critical thinking skills, deeper empathy, and stronger mental health.

The vast majority of public schools can’t afford author visits and guest speakers, eliminating the chance to create that spark that happens when kids are able to see and interact with authors. When they do, reading and writing is demystified. They understand the power of words – and that they can harness that power, too. Reading becomes exciting. Writing becomes necessary.

That’s why One Word at a Time has created the Author Study program: a virtual, interactive series that brings award-winning authors and speakers into classrooms ALL YEAR LONG. And we want to bring Author Study into 1,000 schools this year!

Will you help get kids excited about reading? By becoming a donor, you’re helping us build the movement, nurture the community, and create powerful programming that sparks deep, lifelong reading engagement.
