READ WITH JOY.
WRITE WITH POWER.

CHANGE THE WORLD.

Together, we’re changing the world — one word at a time.

One Word at a Time sparks middle-grade students’ motivation to read and write on their own. We make reading cool and fun!

And research shows that reading for pleasure leads to increased academic achievement, sharper critical thinking skills, deeper empathy, and stronger mental health.

Our goal is to inspire a deep love of reading and writing by nurturing joyful, meaningful literacy experiences such as:

• Dynamic author programs for students

• Transformative learning for educators

• Creative support for children’s book authors

READING FOR
FUN DROPS
SIGNIFICANTLY BY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

And that has negative consequences for kids’ academics AND overall wellbeing.
We’re here to change that.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES:

+ Kids read and write independently and with joy.

+ Educators feel confident and energized.

+ Authors connect meaningfully with students.

OUR FLAGSHIP STUDENT PROGRAM

Author Study is an interactive, virtual author visit series that brings Kwame Alexander and other notable authors into classrooms throughout the school year.

KWAME ALEXANDER

AUTHOR STUDY WITH

Author Study makes virtual author visits easy, affordable, ongoing, and most of all, fun.

And while it’s fun for students, Author Study  supports literacy learning goals. Most importantly, it celebrates the power of words and individual expression.

During every 45-minute virtual livestream, students learn directly from celebrated, published authors. Each session includes...

  • A book talk and read-aloud from a favorite book

  • A brief writing craft lesson - with a handout emailed to registrants before and after

  • A conversation with a special guest author (sometimes two!), with time for questions from students

  • A live Q&A session with Kwame, taking select questions from attendees in the chat.

Registered attendees receive access to the recording, too... which helps overcome scheduling challenges and unexpected disruptions.

"The Author Study with Kwame Alexander was awesome! Mr. Alexander's stories about reading were passionate and I was moved by the stories he shared about his personal experiences of why he writes. He makes me want to read
and discover more..”

Sari

"My students and I loved the whole Author Study series. I liked that Kwame and guests let the kids see the real person and not a scripted version. Thank you for this wonderful experience and we look forward to next school year's series.”
